When our mouths were covered
Can we still sing?
The Men of Reason may say that we can’t
Because our mouths were covered
We are the non-reflected being
But I heard her
In silence but loud
I see her
Walk with her
Sing with her
For the strength
For the wounds
For the hope
For the pain
For all the lived experience
Where we survive
We celebrate it
We sing for ourselves
Title: Sing with Her
Artist: AN
Date Created: Winter, 2022
Words from the Artist: “This poem was actually created back in the winter of 2022, but I revised it a bit for this event. A recent conversation I have about how domestic violence organizations work with Asian women survivors made me think about what can I do for this. I believe that poetry can be a healing experience for both the writer and the readers. It provides a space for thoughts and reflections of our lives. It can be a beautiful connection I would like to make with the audiences.”
